Implicit Bias Briefing – Faculty Searches In-Person

This session will be held in person at Garrett House.

Often, our unconscious biases can influence our decision-making during the hiring process and in our interactions with people dissimilar to us and our experiences. Implicit bias refers to the attitudes we have towards people or the associated stereotypes we harbor about them without our conscious knowledge. You may think you don’t have biases. You are wrong. We all have biases. The key to ensuring that your biases don’t rule how you make decisions means you have to make the conscious effort to counter them. This briefing is an introduction to implicit bias and how we prevent them from influencing us.

Search committee faculty and Whittier College employees are to complete this implicit bias briefing prior to serving on a faculty search committee. Completion of this training allows you to sit on search committees for the next three years, and these trainings count towards professional development in faculty PEGP submissions.

In preparation for the implicit bias briefing, participants are to view the following series of short videos on implicit bias from UCLA:

  1. Preface: Biases and Heuristics (5:14)
  2. Lesson 1: Schemas (3:12)

  4. Lesson 3: Real World Consequences (3:45)
  5. Lesson 5: The IAT (5:14)
  6. Lesson 6: Countermeasures (5:23)

Optional Video:
