DEI Implicit Bias Briefing at Dezember House In-Person

DEI Implicit Bias Briefing

Search committee faculty and Whittier College employees are to complete the implicit bias briefing prior to serving on a faculty search committee. Employees cannot sit on a search committee unless they have successfully completed the implicit bias training within the past three years. These trainings count towards professional development in faculty PEGP submissions.

Step 1: View the implicit bias videos. In preparation for the implicit bias briefing, participants are to view the following series of short informative videos on implicit bias from UCLA:

1.       Preface: Biases and Heuristics (5:14)

2.       Lesson 1: Schemas (3:12)

3.       Lesson 2: Attitudes and Stereotypes (4:13)

4.       Lesson 3: Real World Consequences (3:45)

5.       Lesson 5: The IAT (5:14)

6.       Lesson 6: Countermeasures (5:23)

Optional Video:

7.       Lesson 4: Explicit v. Implicit Bias (2:49)

And to complete four Implicit Association Tests, please go to the homepage at https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/selectatest.html and complete these tests from the list:

  1. Race
  2. Disability
  3. Gender:
    1. Or if a STEM position, Gender & STEM:
  1. Sexuality

Once you complete the videos, please self-certify here.

Step 2Register for an implicit bias briefing. These briefings are available 2 to 3 times per semester and you can sign-up for a session on the Wardman Library Libcal Instruction page here. Briefings will take place at Dezember House.
Completion of the briefing is required to continue as a search committee member. It is critical to complete step 1 & 2 well enough in advance of the search to ensure that faculty are eligible to participate in the search process.
